Snetterton Heath during WWII

The entire area of Snetterton Park formed part of USAAF Snetterton Heath during the WWII. The airfield, known as Station 138, opened in May ‘43 and was home to the 96th Bomb Group, The Mighty Falcons. Over 300 missions were flown from Snetterton and The Mighty Falcons suffered one of the 8th USAAF highest loss rates during the War. A number of airfield buildings still exist in the area, as does one of the main runways, which forms the main access road into Snetterton Park.

A small museum for the 96th Bomb Group is maintained at nearby Eccles School, in the future a permanent exhibition to the 96th Bomb Group will be maintained in Snetterton Park with models, documents, photographs and other artifacts serving as an reminder of the part Snetterton Heath played in WWII whilst increasing awareness of local history.
